This year we are joined by writer Andrew Waters, author of Backcountry War: The Rise of Francis Marion, Banastre Tarleton, and Thomas Sumter, speaking on the topic of  “The Revolution in Mecklenburg.”

The May 20th Society Mission
The May 20th Society promotes Charlotte’s rich history as the first American body to declare independence from Great Britain – more than a year before Thomas Jefferson’s national Declaration. Though the original MecDec was destroyed in a fire some 200 years ago, the spirit of MecDec lives on – a spirit of freedom, leadership and courage.
